laos 2008

In December 2008, 9 paintings by Jean-Marc Huss were sold at a fraction of their market value to raise 40,000 Euros. The funds were used for emergency assistance to schools and students affected by the August 2008 floods of the Mekong River. 20 schools , severely damaged, were selected for urgent help, including some on the banks of the Nam Khan River. We bought new tables, chairs, schoolbooks and learning tools. Other tasks included restoring electricity, repairing the damaged buildings, and remaking all access roads. The allocation of funds to each school was around 2,000 Euros. A German businessman bought the whole series of paintings.

burma 2008

When Cyclone Nargis made landfall in Burma in May 2008, over 100,000 people died and millions were made homeless. 450,000 houses were destroyed as well as 60% of schools. Most of the foreign relief aid was misappropriated by the military junta. Only a small fraction of goods and funds reached the victims. To minimize the risk of having all goods stolen by the army, we hired a Burmese fishing trawler anchored near the Thai border city of Ranong. The vessel was loaded at night time with tents, cement, hammers and nails, plastic sheets , bottled water, washing powder, candles and building tools. The fishermen smuggled in all the goods, directly to their families' village, in the delta. 6 paintings by Jean-Marc Huss were sold to finance the cargo, and we raised 32,000 Euros.

LAOS 2009

This year, we will provide assistance to 2 small, very poor schools, located in the North of Laos, near Luang Prabang. One school has 15 students and the other 29 students. Both are primary schools ( kids 6 to 9 years old) with only one teacher. Villages are poor and most of the kids have no proper uniforms, shoes and learning tools. The classrooms are in need of urgent repair. We will sell 5 paintings to raise around 28,000 Euros, half for each school, One third of the funds will go to upgrade the buildings and build more facilities. One third will be for the students' clothing, schooling materials, books, etc. The last fraction will be allocated to monthly expenses, like teacher salaries, electricity bills, maintenance expenses and a daily simple lunch for all kids.
